Is Strength Training Safe For Kids?

YES!

This is a super common question we are asked by our patients and their parents. In this blog, we aim to uncover any myths around having kids strength train.

First off, What is considered strength training?

  • Strength training - also called resistance training- is a way to build muscle, improve bone density and coordination. Strength training can be performed with weights (dumbbell, kettlebell, barbell, etc.) but it can also be performed with resistance bands and other methods.

What are the benefits of strength training?

  • As mentioned above, it can help develop bone density, increase lean muscle mass, and improve coordination.

  • Improves mood, cognitive focus, and can help weight management.

Common myths with weight lifting with kids:

  • MYTH: If my kid starts lifting, it will stunt their growth.

    • This is false and has been disproved many times. This is probably the most common weight lifting misconception, but we know it is safe to introduce weightlifting early on with correct supervision with a focus on form.

  • MYTH: My kid is going to hurt themselves if they lift weights

    • While there is no way to 100% prevent injuries, gaining exposure to proper weight lifting form, weight room etiquette and equipment at an earlier age can help reduce the chance of injury later on in life.

  • MYTH: Resistance training is only for athletes.

    • This is false. Yes, it can greatly help an athlete become bigger, faster and stronger. However, resistance training has many benefits for overall health. Arguably, it may even be more important now to encourage kids into resistance training as we become more sedentary as a society.
